When the American Civil War ended, the U.S. Federal Government immediately cancelled most contracts for weapons manufacture. This desperately harmed some companies, but Remington's fallback position was their Rolling Block project. This 'new' rifle was based on patents held by Leonard Geiger and Joseph Rider. Scandinavian countries equipped their Military with them and Sweden even obtained license to manufacture their own Rolling Block rifles. This is an excellent original Remington rolling block rifle has a 12.7mm Bore. It has a 36" barrel (53 1/2" overall) and has an external hammer and ladder rear sight. The woodwork and metal work is undamaged with nice patina throughout. The woodwork has only the minor bumps & bruises to be expected of a weapon of this age. It is complete with sling swivels, cleaning rod & bayonet lug. Behind the trigger it is stamped with the Remington Arms Company Patent detail (illustrated).
The barrel bands forward of the ladder sight are stamped "U" ( proof mark indicating the bands were originally assembled correctly as the barrel and the bands are tapered). The top of the barrel is stamped '5070' with letters 'W.A' & 'PJF' either side. The left plate is stamped '190' and the right with model detail '1867'. The right side of the barrel is stamped '50.70', the left '9174'. The butt plate strap is crisply stamped ' 190, CI, 3, C8'.
The stock has a brass roundel inset stamped with the letter 'R'.It's loading & firing action works correctly.
